Shorties: Maca & Blood pressure

Maca is a plant native to the high Andes of Peru that is sometimes referred to as “Peruvian ginseng.” It has been traditionally used as a food and medicine by indigenous people in the Andes region. Some people claim that maca can help to regulate blood pressure, but there is limited scientific evidence to support this claim.

A few small studies have suggested that maca may have a mild blood pressure-lowering effect in people with hypertension. For example, a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that supplementing with maca for four weeks reduced systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) by about 7% in people with high blood pressure. However, it is important to note that these studies have been small and have not been replicated, so it is not clear whether the findings are reliable or applicable to all people.

In general, it is not recommended to use maca or any other supplement as a replacement for established blood pressure-lowering treatments, such as medications prescribed by a doctor. If you have high blood pressure or any other health condition, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional before taking any new supplements or making changes to your treatment plan.
